The Birth/Death Notification Section forms part of the Department of
Civil Registration. Our aim is to provide a service of high standard
to our customers
This web site sets out the standards of service you can expect
from us. It also explains how and where you can get more information
about our services and how to lodge a complaint if you feel
that
we have failed to meet our standards.

Birth/Death Notification Section
A. Notification of Birth
1. The Notification is to be done by the parents within 5 working
days except in extraordinary circumstances.
2. In the case where the parents are married, either the father or
the mother may notify the birth.
3. Documents required:
a. Hospital certificate of birth of the baby
b. Identity documents of both parents i.e.
Either Identity Card, or Passport or Driving License
4. In the case of a birth out of wedlock, it is recommended that
the parents contact the department on phone number 21 239658 or 21
245896
for further information.
N.B. Only after the notification is effected that an official birth
certificate may be issued by the Public Registry, which usually
is ready to be picked up from the Public Registry within 7 working
days.
B. Notification of Death
1. The Notification of the death of a person should be done by a
member of the family. Where this is not possible, it may be done
by a close acquaintance.
2. The person notifying the death is required to produce his/her
Identity document i.e. ID Card or Passport or Driving License.
3. The Maltese Identity Card of the deceased is to be handed in at
the Birth/Death Notification Section of the Department of Civil Registration.
As a rule, the Identity Cards of persons who die at St. Vincent de
Paule Residence or at Mount Carmel Hospital are returned directly
by the respective administrative authorities. It is to be noted that
requirements 1 & 2 still apply.
4. The Public Registry issues an official death certificate only
after notification is effected.
Lodging a Complaint
If you have a complaint it is best to speak to the person who provided
you with the service first. If you would like to pursue the complaint
further, you may lodge a formal complaint.

Notification Section, who will investigate your complaint and advise
you of the outcome at latest
within 7 working days.

Fees charged for our services
-Notification of Birth - €2.33 (Lm 1)* for each new-born
-Notification of Death - No fees are charged for a notification of
death
