Weapons/Firearms Licences

To Keep: To purchase Firearm/Weapon from Dealer

Person purchasing firearm completes an application form supplied by the dealer. Once the application form is completed, the purchaser calls at his/her local police station.

It is important that applicant takes his/her identity card and any existing weapon/firearm licence on application.

To Keep: To keep as a result of a transfer of Firearm/Weapon from a licensed person.

Both persons are to proceed to the purchaser's Police office, taking with them their Police license in respect of Firearms (if any), their I.D. cards and the Firearm being transferred. An application is filed there at.

To Carry: To Carry a Firearm for sporting purposes on Land or Sea

Applicant is to produce the following documents

  • Declaration by Hunters Association confirming that the person is capable of handling a Firearm.
  • An Insurance policy.
  • His/her identity card

Application is filed at the local Police Station.
Applicant is later called for an Environment test. If applicant passes this test may collect License against payment.
Every license is valid for one calendar year starting from the 1st January and ending on the 31st December of each year.

To obtain License to Hunt Wild Rabbits

Applicant must produce a rent book of the land in which Trapping will take place.
Declaration from Hunters Association.
Applicant is later called for an Environment test. If applicant passes this test may collect License against payment.

Clay Pigeon (To Carry): Airguns

Declaration from Shooting Range.
Application is filed at local police station
Applicant is later called for an Environment test. If applicant passes this test may collect License against payment.

License to keep a firearm/weapon: Transfer by Inheritance

(Documents to be produced).
I.D. card of person applying for transfer onto his name.
Death certificate of former licensee.
Copy of license covering Firearm to be transferred.
List of heirs from Notary or Lawyer.
Declaration from heirs (no objection to transfer)
(If any heirs are under 18 years a General Hypothec by the Civil Court has to be submitted.)
Declaration re: wills from Public Registry, Gozo Court & Civil Court.
Indemnity guarantee (Filed at Police Station)
If applicant is licensed under the Arms Ordinance must produce a copy of the License.

Application is filed at local police station.

Conduct Certificates

To collect Conduct Certificate from the Malta Police GHQ – Floriana

Local and Europe Use
In case the Conduct is requested for local or within one of the EU Member States,  only the ID CARD is needed to collect the Certificate. 

Third Countries :
In case the Certificate is needed for any other country (outside the EU),  the Passport should be brought along together with the ID Card.

To note :
If a person in need of this Conduct Certificate, is not in a position to collect this Certificate personally, this may be obtained only by a close relative , when producing the following documents :

  • ID Card of the applicant

  • ID Card of the relative collecting the document

A written authorization letter, authorizing the relative for such collection and  MUST be endorsed with the same signature of the applicant’s ID Card.
