MAGISTRATE DR. ABIGAIL LOFARO LL.D., Mag. Jur. (Eur. Law)
Magistrate Abigail Lofaro was born in Cospicua in September, 1961. She received her education at the Cospicua Primary School, the Convent of the Sacred Heart, De La Salle College and at the University of Malta. She received the Diploma of Notary Public in December 1982 and graduated Doctor of Laws in April 1984, receiving in May 1984 the warrant to practise as a lawyer.She was counsel to the Housing Department, later on assuming concurrently the functions of Acting Housing Secretary and Acting Secretary to the War Damage Commission. Subsequently, she was part of the Law Reform Commission, headed by the late Dr. Edgar Mizzi.
Magistrate Lofaro was subsequently appointed Private Secretary to the Parliamentary Secretary responsible for Social Accommodation. She went on to work in private practice, dealing mostly with civil and commercial matters and specialising in separation and marriage annulment cases, having written her dissertation on “Grounds of Annulment of Marriages, with Special Reference to Defects of a Psychological Nature”.
On the 4th December 1995, she obtained a Diploma in Canonical Marriage cases, Jurisprudence and Procedure, after having successfully followed a diploma course of studies organised under the auspices and direction of the Metropolitan Tribunal of Malta.
On the 9th January 1996, she was called to the Bench and was appointed Magistrate in the Court of Magistrates of Malta and Gozo.
On the 20th November 2001, Magistrate Lofaro again graduated from the University of Malta, obtaining a Magister Juris degree in European and Comparative Law, after having successfully concluded a two year degree course at the University. She wrote her dissertation on “The Concept of Dominance as Applied in Telecommunications Regulation”.
Magistrate Abigail Lofaro is Honorary President of the Lourdes Band Club, Qrendi.
She has been married to Dr. Pierre Lofaro, a practising lawyer, since June 1985 and they have a daughter, Giulia.
She was appointed as Judge on the 5th of September 2006.
