In Malta,
elections of local Councilors are held every 3 years by means of the
system of proportional representation using the single transferable
vote. Elections are held on the second Saturday of March of each year
and the Electoral Commission conducts the elections process.
The first Local Government elections were held during 1993 and 1994 and in a
span of 6 months 67 Councils took office. Following this, as specified in the
Local Councils Act, the next elections were spread out in 1996, 1997 and 1998
respectively. Consequently, as from 1999 onwards, Councils Elections were held
every year according to the legal mechanism established. Each year a third of
Malta`s Councils have their elections.
