FAQs regarding the issue of a Maltese Passport

Who can apply for a Maltese passport?
Anyone claiming to be a Maltese citizen either by birth, descent, marriage, registration, naturalization and dual nationality.  

From where can I obtain an application form for a Maltese passport?
From the Passport Offices in Malta and Gozo, Local Councils, Police Stations and Travel Agencies.  

Can I download an application form from your website?
Yes. Our website address is www.mjha.gov.mt/services/passport/form/pdf 

Who can sign my application form and photographs?
A professional person, doctor, lawyer, notary public, priest, bank manager, a public officer not below the grade of principal or someone of similar standing.  

How many photos do I need to bring?
Two photos, one of which has to be signed at the back by your recommender.  

Do I need to have my application form countersigned by a recommender if I already have a passport?
Yes. All applications must be countersigned by a professional person.

Do I need to bring my birth certificate and expired passport?
Birth certificates are not normally required. Bring your expired or expiring passport if you already have one.  

How do I get my passport in my married surname to use on my honeymoon?
You need to fill a new application form and take two new photos which have to be signed by a professional. You have to bring a copy of the marriage banns from the Public Registry and you need to surrender your present passport. Payment will be as for a new passport.  

What happens to my valid visa in my expired passport?
You have to contact the Embassy of the country which has issued the visa to enable them to transfer the visa on your new passport.  

I’ve lost my passport. What do I do?
If your passport is lost or stolen and it is still valid, it is important to lodge a report to the police and submit a new application for a replacement passport. You have to make a sworn declaration at our offices and pay the fees accordingly.  

Are there any passports with more pages? Can the Passport Office add pages to my current passport?
No. We only issue standard 32page passports. Pages cannot be added.  

Someone told me that as a Maltese citizen, I don’t need a passport to travel to other EU countries. Is this true?
Yes. All Maltese citizens have the right of free movement within EU countries. So if you wish to, you may travel with your ID card only. However, it is advisable to carry your Maltese passport with you to be able to provide evidence of identity and nationality if the need may be.

Where do I apply for a Maltese passport if I am living outside the Maltese islands?
You have to apply at the Malta Embassy which is nearest to you. For a detailed list of Embassies, please contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Malta or visit their web site at www.foreign.gov.mt 

Can a child be included on a parent’s passport?
No. Since February 2001, all children must have their own passport.  

My child is included on my current passport. Can he still travel with me?
Yes. Your children can still travel with you until they reach the age of 16 or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.  

Will my child be included again in my new passport?
No. If you have children included in your current passport, they will not be re-included in your new passport.  

So, does my child need a passport to travel?
Yes. All children from new-born babies must have their own passport.  

Who can sign my child’s application form (under 18)?
A professional person, doctor, lawyer, notary public, priest, bank manager, a public officer not below the grade of principal or someone of similar standing. Both parents must also sign on the application form.  

What do I need to bring with me to apply for my child’s passport?
You have to bring the application form and your child’s photos signed by the recommender. You have to bring both parent’s Identity Cards (or passports), your child’s expired or expiring passport and the relevant fees.  

Does a parent need to delete the child’s details from his/her passport, when the parent is applying for a separate passport for the child?
Yes, the parent has to submit his/her passport so that the child can be deleted from the parent’s passport.  

Do I have to pay when I apply for the passport or when I come to collect it?
You have to pay on application.  

How long does it take for my passport to be ready?
It takes 4 working days.  

And if I need it urgently?
We provide an express service for urgent cases. Your passport will be ready after 24hours.

If I have any queries, how can I get in touch with the Passport Office?
The telephone numbers are 2124 6821, 2122 2286 and our free-phone is 800 772 386. We open from 7.30am till 2.00pm, Mondays to Friday and from 7.30am till 11.00am on Saturdays. On Wednesdays only, we are also open from 3.00pm till 6.00pm.
