Mr. Mario Caruana
Director General (Operations)

Mr Mario Caruana was born on 11 January 1960 in Balzan. He received his secondary education at the Archbishops Minor Seminary in Floriana and then followed a course in Hotel Management at the Malta College for Arts, Science and Technology. He later obtained a Diploma in Public Administration from the University of Malta.

He joined the Civil Service in 1978 as a clerk within the Ministry for Agriculture and Fisheries and three years later was appointed Executive Officer. In 1991 he successful competed in the recruitment examination for the post of Administrative Officer and in 1996 as Senior Principal. During this period he was given responsibility for the administrative setup of the then Countryside Section within the Environment Protection Department. At a time when the public debate on our environment was just starting, the unit was actively involved in bring to the forefront environmental awareness of our countryside.

In 1998 he moved to Budget Office within the Ministry of Finance and served as desk officer responsible for monitoring the Recurrent Expenditure of various ministries and departments and the annual compilation of their financial estimates.

In 2000 he was appointed Assistant Director in the Department of Corporate Services in the Ministry of Resources and Infrastructure. Duties included office management and tendering of advice to the Permanent Secretary on financial and administrative matters pertaining to the Works Division and various entities falling within the portfolio of the Ministry for Resources and Infrastructure. During this time he served as Secretary to the Malta Engineering Board and was the first Secretary to be appointed to the Malta Resources Authority.

In 2004 he was appointed Director Policy Development within the Ministry for Justice and Home Affairs where he was responsible for the drafting and publishing of Government’s policy document on asylum seekers and irregular immigration. In 2007 he was appointed to Director General (Operations) within the same Ministry.

He is married to Maria nee` Micallef and has a son, Stephen
